Ottawa – During Winterlude, City Hall is the place to celebrate Ottawa’s wintry present and past. Winterlude activities run every weekend from January 31 to February 17.
One of this year’s free activities will showcase the history of how residents thrived in Ottawa’s winters. Visitors to Jean Pigott Plaza each Winterlude Saturday, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., will discover sports and other entertainments of day’s past, along with famous local characters who survived our snow and cold in the early days. This exhibit, which will change each weekend, features contributions from 10 local museums from the Ottawa Museum Network
“Winter is definitely entrenched into our city’s culture and history,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “That’s why it’s great to see City Hall as a host site for the Winterlude celebration, with both indoor and outdoor activities, including the popular Rink of Dreams. It truly makes City Hall a people place for all seasons.”
“We are pleased to have our community museums take part in this historic look back on how our city’s people made the most of winter,” said Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of the City’s Community and Protective Services Committee.”
Other City Hall Winterlude activities also include the Rink of Dreams in Marion Dewar Plaza, and the 10th annual Enbridge free pancake breakfast on Saturday, February 1 at 10 a.m.
Visitors to City Hall can also take in other free activities including a visit to the Karsh-Masson Gallery, the Barbara Ann Scott Gallery, and the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame.
Again this year, visitors can take advantage of the free Winterlude Sno-Bus shuttle. It will operate on all three Winterlude weekends, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sundays. The service, which is sponsored by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) Commission, travels between Confederation Park (across from City Hall) and Dow’s Lake on a 10 to 15-minute frequency.
