Cyclists can use sidewalk to safely cross Booth Street Bridge

Cyclists crossing the newly-reconstructed section of the Booth Street Bridge, between Albert Street and the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway, can now use the sidewalk to cross.

Although the paved shoulder on the bridge remains an option for cyclists, use of the sidewalk will provide cyclists with an alternative, safe way cross the bridge without coming into conflict with traffic. The sidewalk will be maintained throughout the winter and connects with the cycling network at both ends of the bridge.

Cyclists using the sidewalk must yield right-of-way to pedestrians, give an audible signal before passing them, and should ride in the same direction as traffic.

Although cycling on the sidewalk is normally prohibited, the City’s Traffic and Parking By-law permits cycling along sidewalks when official or authorized signs are in place, as is the case on the Booth Street Bridge. The use of the sidewalk is a temporary solution to address the needs of cyclists until a permanent change can be made.
