The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, P.C., Chief Justice of Canada, to receive the Key to the City of Ottawa

Ottawa– Mayor Jim Watson will present the Key to the City to the Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, P.C., Chief Justice of Canada, at a ceremony at City Hall on the evening of Tuesday, March 22.

 

Speaking at the ceremony will be:

  • His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., Governor General of Canada
  • The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada
  • His Worship Jim Watson, Mayor of the City of Ottawa
  • Mr. Don Newman, C.M., LL.D., former senior parliamentary editor for CBC Television and currently Senior Counsel, Ensight Canada and Navigator Limited

 

Date:  Tuesday, March 22
Time:  7 p.m.
Location: Council Chambers, Ottawa City Hall, 110 Laurier Avenue West

 

Beverley McLachlin is the 17th and current Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, the first woman to hold this position, and the longest serving Chief Justice in Canadian history.

 

His Worship Stanley Lewis presented the first Key to the City of Ottawa in 1935 to then Governor General of Canada Lord Tweedsmuir and his wife Lady Tweedsmuir.

 

Key to the City recipients include Her Royal Highness The Princess Elizabeth (now Queen Elizabeth II), Her Royal Highness Princess Margrietof the Netherlands, author Margaret Atwood, photographers Yousuf and Malak Karsh, the Community Foundation of Ottawa, actress Sandra Oh and Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson.
