Rideau River ice blasting cancelled

Ottawa– The media photo opportunity and ice blasting operations that were planned for the Rideau River this weekend have been cancelled. A combination of environmental factors, including warm weather and less ice on the river than usual at this time of year, have made the normal ice blasting above Rideau Falls at the Sussex Street Bridge unnecessary.

The City, in partnership with the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, undertakes ice breaking operations each year to alleviate possible spring flooding in flood-prone areas. Other ice breaking operations will continue as planned. The amphibious excavator equipment will be used in various locations along the river.

Residents are reminded to keep away from the river due to high water levels, and to always supervise children around water.
